Selenne Bañuelos (born January 29, 1985) is an American mathematician. She is a professor of mathematics at California State University Channel Islands. Her work focuses on how math can help us understand living things, like how populations grow or change.

About Selenne Bañuelos

Selenne Bañuelos grew up in Boyle Heights, a community in Los Angeles, California. Her parents were immigrants from Mexico. She became very interested in mathematics.

Her Education Journey

Selenne studied mathematics at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and earned her first degree in 2007. She then went on to get her Ph.D. (a very high degree) in applied mathematics from the University of Southern California (USC) in 2013. Her Ph.D. research was about how populations of living things change over time and move between different places.

While she was studying for her Ph.D., Selenne was recognized for her excellent teaching skills. She also helped start a student group at USC called SACNAS. This group supports students in science, technology, engineering, and math, especially those from diverse backgrounds.

Teaching and Mentoring

In 2014, Selenne Bañuelos became a professor at California State University Channel Islands. She loves to help students learn and grow. She continues to advise the SACNAS chapter there. She also mentors students through programs like Math Alliance and the CSU Alliance PUMP Program. These programs help students prepare for advanced studies in math.

Awards and Recognition

Selenne Bañuelos has received several honors for her work.

  • In 2014, she was chosen as a Linton Poodry SACNAS Leadership Institute fellow.
  • In 2015, she was a Project NExT fellow, which helps new professors learn great teaching methods.
  • In 2018, she was featured on the Lathisms calendar, which celebrates Hispanic and Latinx mathematicians.
  • In 2020, she received the Henry L. Alder Award for Distinguished Teaching from the Mathematical Association of America. This award recognizes professors who are excellent teachers.
  • She is also featured in a special deck of playing cards called EvenQuads. These cards highlight important women mathematicians.
