Early Life and Education
Selina Tobaccowala grew up in New Jersey and went to Ramsey High School. When she was 14 years old, she spent six days volunteering in India. She helped at a shelter for people with disabilities. This shelter was connected to the Missionaries of Charity.
After high school, Selina went to Stanford University. She studied computer science and earned her bachelor's degree there.
Selina's Career Journey
Starting Evite: An Online Invitation Company
While still in college in 1997, Selina Tobaccowala and her friend Al Lieb started a company called Evite. Evite became a popular website for sending invitations to events online. Selina was the vice president of engineering at Evite. This meant she was in charge of the technical side of building the website.
In 2001, a company called Ticketmaster bought Evite. After helping with the change, Selina moved to Ticketmaster's Europe division. There, she became a senior vice president. She helped manage the products Ticketmaster offered in Europe.
Leading at SurveyMonkey
In 2009, Selina joined SurveyMonkey, a company that helps people create online surveys. She started as the vice president of product and engineering. Later, she became the president and chief technology officer (CTO) of SurveyMonkey. As CTO, she was responsible for all the technology used by the company.
Creating Gixo: A Fitness App
In 2016, Selina teamed up with Al Lieb again, her co-founder from Evite. They started a new company called Gixo. Gixo was a fitness app that offered live exercise classes on mobile phones.
In 2019, Gixo was bought by Openfit. Openfit is part of the Beachbody Company. Selina then became Openfit's chief digital officer. This role meant she oversaw all the digital parts of the company.
