Selma, Missouri facts for kids
Selma is a small, unincorporated community located in southeastern Jefferson County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. An "unincorporated community" means it's a group of homes and businesses that doesn't have its own local government, like a city or town would. Selma is found on the west side of US Route 61, about six miles southeast of a town called Festus. The wide, flat land near the Mississippi River is just two miles to the east.
History
The community of Selma had a post office that opened way back in 1827. This post office helped people send and receive letters and packages for many years, until it finally closed in 1913. Selma got its name from a place mentioned in a famous collection of poems called the Ossian cycle. These poems were very popular a long time ago.
