Selma Ida Jacobsson (born January 27, 1841, in Stockholm, Sweden – died March 30, 1899, in Stockholm) was a talented Swedish photographer. She became famous for her beautiful portraits.

Selma Jacobsson: A Royal Photographer

Selma Jacobsson was born into a family in Stockholm. Her father, Levi Abraham Jacobsson, was a merchant. In 1881, Selma married Norayr de Byzance, who was a linguist. A linguist is someone who studies languages.

Learning Photography

Selma learned photography from a well-known photographer named Bertha Valerius. Bertha was also a woman photographer. Learning from her helped Selma become very skilled.

Opening Her Own Studio

In 1872, Selma Jacobsson opened her very own photography studio. It was in Stockholm, the capital city of Sweden. Her studio quickly became popular. She took pictures of many important people.

Working for High Society

Selma's clients included people from the "diplomatic corps" and "high society." The diplomatic corps means people who work for their country in another country, like ambassadors. High society refers to wealthy and important families. They all wanted Selma to take their portraits.

Photographer to the Royal Court

Selma Jacobsson was so good at her job that she received a special honor. In 1899, she was named "Kungl. Hoffotograf." This means "Photographer of the Royal Court." It was a very important title. It meant she was the official photographer for the royal family of Sweden. This showed how much her work was valued.
