Sem Moema's Early Life and Education
Sem Moema was born in Islington, London. Her parents came from South Africa. They left their home country in the 1970s. They were escaping a system called Apartheid. This system caused unfair treatment based on race.
Sem went to St Michael's Catholic Grammar School. She also studied at Mahindra United World College. Later, she earned a degree (Bachelor of Arts) from Keele University. She also got a Master's degree in Public Policy from Birkbeck, University of London. This degree helps people understand how governments make decisions.
Sem Moema's Political Career
Sem Moema started her political journey as a local councillor. In 2006, she was first elected to Hackney Council. She represented the Hackney Downs ward. A councillor is someone elected to make decisions for a local area.
She took a break from the council in 2010. But she returned in 2016 after a special election. She was re-elected to Hackney Council in 2018 and again in 2022.
Helping with Housing in Hackney
On Hackney Council, Sem Moema advises the mayor on housing. She focuses on homes rented from private landlords. She also works on making housing more affordable. She helped start a licensing plan for rented homes in Hackney. This plan helps make sure rented properties are safe and well-managed.
Working for London in the Assembly
In May 2021, Sem Moema was elected to the London Assembly. The London Assembly checks the work of the Mayor of London. It also looks at important issues across the city.
She joined several important committees. These included the Housing, Police and Crime, and Confirmation Hearings Committees. She is also the leader of the London Assembly's housing committee.
Campaigns for Fair Housing
Sem Moema has worked hard on London's housing problems. She campaigned to increase the Local Housing Allowance. This allowance helps people pay their rent. Rents in London have been going up a lot. Her campaign was successful. The government agreed to her request in a later announcement.
She also campaigned against "no fault" evictions. These are called Section 21 evictions. They allow landlords to ask tenants to leave without a reason. Her efforts were successful. The Labour Government, formed after the 2024 General Election, plans to ban these evictions.
