Early Life and Education
Sem Moema was born in Islington, a part of London. Her parents came from South Africa in the 1970s. They left their home country because of a system called Apartheid. This system had unfair rules that separated people based on their race.
She went to St Michael's Catholic Grammar School and Mahindra United World College. Later, she studied at Keele University and earned a degree. She also got another degree from Birkbeck, University of London, where she studied public policy.
Political Career
Serving Hackney Council
Sem Moema first became a local politician in 2006. She was elected as a councillor for the Hackney Council. She represented the Hackney Downs ward.
She took a break from the council but returned in 2016 after winning a special election. She was re-elected in 2018 and again in 2022.
As a councillor, Sem Moema worked as an adviser to the mayor of Hackney. She focused on housing, especially for people who rent their homes. She helped create a system to license privately rented houses in Hackney. This helps make sure rental homes are safe and fair.
Working for the London Assembly
In May 2021, Sem Moema was elected to the London Assembly. This group helps make decisions for the whole city of London. She joined important committees that deal with housing, police, and crime.
She is also the leader of the London Assembly's housing committee. This means she helps guide discussions and decisions about housing issues across London.
Important Campaigns and Achievements
Sem Moema has worked hard to help people with housing problems in London. She campaigned to increase the Local Housing Allowance. This is money that helps people pay their rent. Her campaign was successful, and the government increased the allowance.
She also campaigned against "no fault" evictions, known as Section 21 evictions. These evictions allowed landlords to ask tenants to leave without a reason. After her efforts, the Labour Government, formed after the 2024 General Election, included a ban on these evictions in their plans.
