Don Serafín María de Sotto y Abbach was a Spanish noble, writer, and politician. He was also known as the 3rd Count of Clonard and the 5th Marquis of la Granada. He is most famous for being the Prime Minister of Spain for just one day in October 1849.
Who Was Serafín María de Sotto?
Serafín María de Sotto was born in Barcelona, Spain, on October 12, 1793. He came from a noble family. His father was Raimundo de Sotto, the 2nd Count of Clonard. His mother was Ramona Abbach, the 4th Marquise of la Granada.
His family had roots in Ireland, but they had lived in Spain for a long time. Their family name, Sutton, became "Sotto" in Spanish. Serafín María de Sotto passed away in Madrid, Spain, on February 23, 1862.
A Very Short Time as Prime Minister
Serafín María de Sotto was an important leader in the Spanish government. He became the Prime Minister of Spain on October 19, 1849. However, his time in this powerful role was incredibly short. He served for only one day, stepping down on October 20, 1849.
Before him, Ramon Maria Narvaez was the Prime Minister. After Sotto's very brief term, Juan Bravo Murillo took over the position.
