Sérgio Bernardino, known to many as Serginho Chulapa, was a famous Brazilian football player. He was born on December 23, 1953. Serginho played as a striker, which means he was a main goal-scorer for his team. After his playing days, he also became a football coach.

Serginho's Football Journey
Serginho Chulapa had a long and exciting career in football. He played for many different clubs and even represented his country, Brazil. He was known for scoring many goals.
Early Days at São Paulo
Serginho started his football journey in his hometown of São Paulo. He joined the youth team of São Paulo FC and worked his way up. His first game with the main team was on June 6, 1973. It was a friendly match that ended in a 0-0 draw.
Just four days later, he scored his first goal! This happened in a game against Corinthians. After a short loan to Marília, Serginho became a key player for São Paulo. In the 1977 season, he scored an amazing 18 goals.
He faced a tough time in 1978 when he was suspended from playing for a while. This meant he missed the 1978 FIFA World Cup, even though he was expected to play. In the 1981 finals, he was sent off the field during a game.
Moving to Santos FC
In 1983, Serginho joined Santos FC, another big club in Brazil. This was a great move for him! He became the top goal scorer in two major tournaments that year. He scored 22 goals in both the Campeonato Paulista and the Série A.
The next year, he helped Santos win the state championship. During his first time playing for Santos, he scored 74 goals in 110 matches.
Time with Corinthians
In 1985, Serginho moved to Corinthians, a rival team. This team was known as the "Corinthian Selection" because it had so many talented players. Serginho played well there before moving on.
Later Playing Career
Serginho returned to Santos in 1986. He later said his time at Corinthians was like a "sabbatical year." However, he faced some injuries during this second period with Santos. After that, he moved to Portugal to play for Marítimo.
He came back to Santos for a third time in 1988. After playing regularly, he moved to Malatyaspor in Turkey. He returned to Santos again in 1989. Before retiring in 1993 at age 39, he also played for Portuguesa Santista, São Caetano, and Atlético Sorocaba.
Playing for Brazil
Serginho also had the honor of playing for the Brazil national football team. He played 20 games for his country between May 1979 and July 1982. He was part of the team that played in the 1982 FIFA World Cup. In that tournament, he played in all five matches and scored two goals.
He also represented Brazil in a special tournament called the World Cup of Masters in 1990. He even scored a goal in the final game against the Netherlands.
Serginho's Coaching Career
After his playing career, Serginho became a football coach. He often returned to Santos FC in different coaching roles.
Early Coaching Roles
In 1994, Serginho went back to Santos as an assistant coach. He briefly became the main manager that year. In 1995, he managed União São João.
In 1996, he coached Portuguesa Santista, a club he had played for. He helped them get promoted to the first division of the Paulistão league. He also coached São Caetano and returned to Portuguesa Santista in 1999.
Returning to Santos as Coach
In 2000, after coaching Remo and Araçatuba, Serginho returned to Santos as an assistant coach. In August 2001, he became the main manager but resigned shortly after.
He coached Portuguesa Santista again in 2002. From 2005 to 2007, he was an assistant coach at Santos. He also stepped in as interim manager for short periods when the main coach left.
Later Coaching Years
On February 29, 2008, Serginho became the manager of Portuguesa Santista for the fourth time. Later that year, on August 8, he returned to Santos as an assistant coach. He continued in assistant roles for many years.
In July 2009, he was an interim manager for Santos again. On July 23, 2018, he took over as interim manager for Santos for a short time before returning to his assistant duties.
Serginho left his coaching duties at Santos on August 3, 2022. He joined the club's program for former star players.
