Sergio Pintor (born November 16, 1937 – died December 26, 2020) was an Italian Catholic leader. He served as the Bishop for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Ozieri in Italy.
Before becoming a bishop, Mr. Pintor worked for the Italian Episcopal Conference (CEI). He was in charge of their office that helped with health care outreach. This was during the time when Cardinal Ruini was leading the CEI.
Early Life and Education
Sergio Pintor was born in Italy. He studied at a special school called a seminary in Oristano. There, he learned about the church and prepared to become a priest.
On July 9, 1961, he became a priest for the Diocese of Oristano. Later, in 1969, he earned a degree in Pastoral Theology from the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome. This university is a very important place for studying church matters.
Work as a Priest
After becoming a priest, Sergio Pintor worked in his home diocese. He was an assistant priest at the main church in Oristano. He also helped lead the young men's group for Catholic Action, which is a group for Catholic people who want to serve their community.
Later, he became a spiritual director at the Archbishop's seminary in Oristano. This meant he helped guide students who were studying to become priests.
From 1970 to 1995, he also helped the CEI's National Catechetical Office. He worked on creating new catechisms (books that teach about Catholic beliefs) and training people to teach them. In 1985, he was given a special title: honorary prelate of His Holiness. This is an honor given by the Pope.
He also worked as an advisor for the Pontifical Council for Pastoral Assistance to Health Care Workers. This group helps guide the church's work in health care around the world.
Becoming a Bishop
On September 29, 2006, just before his 69th birthday, Sergio Pintor was chosen to be the bishop of the Diocese of Ozieri. It is not common for someone to become a bishop at this age, as most are appointed younger.
On December 8, 2006, he officially became a bishop. This ceremony is called episcopal consecration. It was performed by Paolo Romeo, who was the Pope's representative (called an apostolic nuncio) in Italy at the time.
Retirement
In November 2012, Bishop Pintor sent his resignation to Pope Benedict XVI. Bishops usually offer to resign when they turn 75 years old. This is a common practice in the Catholic Church.
His resignation was accepted on December 10, 2012. After this, he retired from his role as bishop.
