Sesser is a small city located in Franklin County, Illinois, in the United States. In 2020, about 1,888 people lived there. The city's mayor is C. Jason Ashmore.

History of Sesser
How Sesser Began
Sesser was once a wide-open prairie with fields of wheat and corn. In the summer of 1904, people discovered coal here. This discovery changed the area forever.
Soon after, in 1906, the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad built train tracks to Sesser. The new town was named after John Sesser, who was a surveyor for the railroad.
Early Mines and Growth
The very first coal mine in Sesser was called the Keller Mine. It started operating between 1905 and 1906.
Sesser officially became a village in 1906. Just three years later, in 1909, it became a city. Another important mine, Old Ben Coal Mine No. 16, also known as Sesser Mine, was active from 1905 to 1923.
The Sesser Opera House
A special building in Sesser is the Sesser Opera House. It was built in 1914 and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's a very important historical building!
