Seumas O'Kelly (born 1881 – died 14 November 1918) was a talented Irish writer. He wrote many stories, plays, and worked as a journalist. A journalist is someone who writes for newspapers or magazines. He is especially known for his short stories, like "The Weaver's Grave," which is considered one of the best Irish short stories ever written.

His Early Life and Journalism

Seumas O'Kelly was born in 1881 in a town called Loughrea in County Galway, Ireland. He went to school in his local area. He started his career as a journalist with a newspaper called Southern Star in Cork.

Later, he moved to work for the Leinster Leader newspaper in Naas. He became the Editor there. An Editor is in charge of what goes into the newspaper. He stayed at the Leinster Leader until 1916.

Working for Nationality and the Easter Rising

In 1916, Seumas O'Kelly started working for Nationality. This was a newspaper for the Sinn Féin political party. Sinn Féin is an Irish political party that wanted Ireland to be independent.

Seumas O'Kelly's brother, Michael O'Kelly, was also involved in politics. Michael took over as Editor at the Leinster Leader in 1912. However, after the Easter Rising in April 1916, Michael was interned. This means he was held prisoner because of his political actions. Seumas then returned to the Leinster Leader for a short time.

There is a special plaque outside the old Leinster Leader offices in Naas. It honors Seumas O'Kelly and calls him "a gentle revolutionary."

His Friendship with Arthur Griffith

Seumas O'Kelly was a friend of Arthur Griffith. Arthur Griffith was a very important Irish nationalist. He started the Sinn Féin political party and its newspaper, Nationality.

His Final Days

Sadly, Seumas O'Kelly died too young. He passed away from a heart attack on 14 November 1918. This happened after the police raided the Nationality newspaper office in Harcourt Street.

Seumas O'Kelly wrote many plays, short stories, and novels. A novel is a long story, and a novella is a story that is shorter than a novel but longer than a short story.

His short story "The Weaver's Grave" is very famous. It even won an award called the Prix Italia for Radio Drama in 1961 when it was made into a radio play.
