Discovering Seventy Six Falls

Seventy Six Falls is a special place in Kentucky. It's a waterfall that changes its look depending on the water level. Before a big lake was created nearby, the waterfall was much taller. Today, it's still a wonderful sight to see.

How Tall Is the Waterfall?

The height of Seventy Six Falls has changed over time. Before Lake Cumberland was built, the waterfall was about 84 feet tall. That's like a really tall building! However, when Lake Cumberland was created by building a dam, the water level rose. Now, when the lake is at its usual level, the waterfall is about 38 feet tall. It's still impressive, but not as high as it used to be.

Where Did the Name Come From?

The name "Seventy Six Falls" has a few interesting stories behind it.

Named After a Nearby Town?

One popular idea is that the waterfall was named after a small community nearby called Seventy Six, Kentucky. It makes sense that a waterfall would be named after a close town.

Was It Named for Its Height?

Some people used to think the waterfall was named "Seventy Six" because they believed it was 76 feet tall. But, as we learned, its height was actually closer to 84 feet before the lake was built. So, this idea might not be true.

What About the Community's Name?

The community of Seventy Six itself also has a mysterious name! Some people say the town's name came from a special survey marker used to measure land. Others believe it was named to honor the year 1776, which is when the United States declared its independence. The community was settled around 1806, about 30 years after that important year.

A post office was first set up in the area in 1830. It was called Goodson. Later, in 1834, a person named Charles D. Semple changed the post office's name to Seventy Six.

A Park to Explore

Long ago, there were several mills along Indian Creek, above where the waterfall is now. Mills are places where grain is ground into flour. Today, this area is a park. The park is looked after by the United States Army Corps of Engineers. This group helps manage Lake Cumberland and other important water projects. It's a great place to visit and enjoy nature.
