Seybert, Missouri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Seybert was once a small town in Dade County, Missouri. It's known as an "extinct town" or "ghost town" because people no longer live there.

The Story of Seybert

Seybert got its start when a post office opened there in 1887. Having a post office was a big deal for a community back then. It meant mail could be sent and received, connecting the town to the outside world. This post office stayed open for many years, finally closing in 1918.

The town was named after a man named Silas E. Seybert. He owned and ran a local mill in the area. Mills were very important in those days for grinding grain into flour.

What Was Life Like in Seybert?

By 1899, Seybert was a busy little place located right by the Sac River. It had several important businesses that helped the people living there.

  • General Store: This was like a modern-day supermarket, selling all sorts of things people needed.
  • Grocery Store: A place specifically for food and household items.
  • Blacksmith: This skilled person worked with metal, making and repairing tools, horseshoes, and other metal items.
  • Mill: The mill, likely the one owned by Silas Seybert, was crucial for grinding crops.

The town also had a meeting place for the Grand Army of the Republic. This was a group for soldiers who had fought in the American Civil War. It was a place where veterans could gather and support each other.

Even though Seybert is no longer a populated town, its history tells us about the small communities that helped build Missouri.
