Seán "Seánie" Duggan (born November 2, 1922 – died September 26, 2013) was an Irish hurler. He was a fantastic goalkeeper for the Galway senior team.

Seánie was born in Galway. He started playing for the Galway senior team when he was 21 years old. His first big game was in the 1943 championship.

For over ten years, Seánie was a key player. He was the last line of defense for his team. Even though he was a great player, he didn't win many big trophies with Galway. He played in one All-Ireland final but his team didn't win.

Seánie also played for the Connacht team. This team is made up of players from different counties in the Connacht province. He won a special medal called the Railway Cup in 1947 with them.

At his local club, Liam Mellows, he was very successful. He won two county championships with his club.

Seánie played 12 championship games for Galway. He stopped playing after Galway lost to Cork in the 1953 All-Ireland final.

His brothers, Jimmy and Paddy, also played for Galway. His sister, Monica, was a famous camogie player. Camogie is a sport similar to hurling, played by women.

Many people think Seánie Duggan was one of the best hurlers ever. He was even chosen for a special "Team of the Century." This team was made up of amazing players who never won an All-Ireland medal.

Playing for Clubs and Counties

Club Hurling Success

Seánie Duggan played for his local club, Liam Mellows. He had a lot of success with them.

  • He helped his club win the county title in 1945.
  • The very next year, in 1946, they won the county title again!

Playing for Galway County

Seánie first became well-known when he played his first game for Galway in 1943. This was an All-Ireland semi-final game. Galway lost to Antrim by a score of 7-0 to 6-2.

For the rest of the 1940s, Galway often reached the All-Ireland semi-finals. But they kept losing these important games.

Winning a National League Medal

In 1951, Galway finally had a big win. They beat Wexford 6-7 to 3-4 in the "home" National Hurling League final.

Then, they played New York in the actual league final. Galway won a close game, 2-11 to 2-8. This win gave Seánie Duggan a National League medal.

The 1953 All-Ireland Final

Two years later, in 1953, Galway played a very strong Kilkenny team. Galway won this game, which meant they went to the All-Ireland final.

In the final, they played against Cork. Galway lost the game by a score of 3-3 to 0-8. This was Seánie Duggan's last game for Galway.

Playing for Connacht Province

Seánie also played for the Connacht team. This team competes in the inter-provincial hurling competition.

  • In 1947, Connacht played against Munster.
  • Seánie's team won the game.
