The name "Shack Mills" comes from a mill that was built there a long time ago. A man named Mcshack Ratliff started this mill. Because of his mill, the area became known as Shack's Mills.
For a short time, Shack Mills even had its own post office. This post office was open from 1871 until 1874. It helped people send and receive letters and packages in the community.
