Shackelton is a fascinating ghost town located in Chattooga County, in the state of Georgia, United States. A ghost town is a place where most or all people have left, often because the reason the town was there in the first place disappeared.
History of Shackelton
Shackelton was started in 1909. It was built as a mining community, which means most people living there worked in mines nearby. These mines dug for valuable minerals or resources from the ground.
Why Shackelton Became a Ghost Town
The town of Shackelton did not last very long. In the 1920s, the mines that provided jobs for the people of Shackelton closed down. When the mines closed, there was no longer a reason for people to live there. Because of this, everyone moved away, and Shackelton became a ghost town.
Post Office in Shackelton
Even though it was a small and short-lived town, Shackelton had its own post office. It was open for a short time, from 1910 to 1911. This shows that for a brief period, Shackelton was an active, if small, community.
