Making a Difference with ABKT
Shad Begum started an organization called the Association for Behaviour and Knowledge Transformation (ABKT) in 1994. Her goal was to help women grow and develop in her area. At first, it was known as Anjuman Behbood-i-Khawateen Talash.
Challenges and Successes
Shad Begum faced many challenges in her community. It was a very traditional place where women often had fewer chances. She kept working hard despite these difficulties. When things became unsafe in her area, she bravely moved her organization's office to Peshawar.
ABKT has done a lot of good work. They have helped improve education for girls and women. They also teach women about their rights and how to stay healthy.
Community Projects
Beyond helping women directly, ABKT has also worked on many community projects. They have built hanging bridges and installed hand pumps for clean water. They also dug wells and paved streets. ABKT even gives small loans to local business owners. This helps people start or grow their businesses. The organization also helps women learn new skills. ABKT gets money from groups in Pakistan and other countries to do all this work.
International Recognition

Shad Begum received a very special award on March 8, 2012. She was given the International Women of Courage Award. The US First Lady, Michelle Obama, and the Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, presented her with this honor.
This award was very important because Shad Begum comes from a place where few women work outside their homes. Because of safety concerns, she asked news reporters not to share the news widely at the time. Her courage and dedication have inspired many people around the world.
