Shadowgate is an exciting fantasy book for young readers. It was written by Emily Rodda, a famous Australian author. This book is the second part of the thrilling Dragons of Deltora series. It's also the third big series in the popular Deltora world. Scholastic first published Shadowgate in 2005.

The Quest Continues

This book continues the amazing journey of three heroes: Lief, Barda, and Jasmine. Their mission is to find the four Sisters of the North. These powerful beings are crucial for the safety of Deltora. The heroes must travel far north to find the next Sister.

Captured by the Masked Ones

As they journey, Lief, Barda, and Jasmine are captured. They are taken in by a strange group called the Masked Ones. This group is a circus troop. All its members wear masks that are stuck to their faces. The Masked Ones were started by a man named Ballum. He was a good friend of an old king. However, Ballum was wrongly accused of being a traitor. He had to run away from his home.

While the companions are with the Masked Ones, strange and dangerous things happen. A mysterious specter keeps appearing. It tries to harm people around Lief, Barda, and Jasmine. The heroes must be very careful. They try to understand who or what this specter is.

Meeting the Lapis Lazuli Dragon

Eventually, the heroes manage to escape from the Masked Ones. Their journey leads them to a special place. There, they meet a magnificent creature. It is the Lapis Lazuli Dragon, named Fortuna. Dragons are very important in Deltora. They often help the heroes on their quests.

Secrets of Shadowgate Castle

The companions continue their search for the Sister. They find a castle near a village called Shadowgate. This village is the northernmost point in all of Deltora. Inside the castle, they discover a young man named Bede. He is the son of Bess, who is the leader of the Masked Ones.

At first, Lief, Barda, and Jasmine think Bede might be the guardian they are looking for. However, they soon learn the truth. The real guardian is a girl named Kirsten. She is from Shadowgate village. Kirsten had fallen in love with Bede. But Bede loved her sister, Mariette, instead. Because of her jealousy, Kirsten made a terrible choice. She gave herself over to the Shadow Lord. She agreed to become the Guardian of the North. Her goal was to keep Bede prisoner forever.

The mysterious specter that caused trouble earlier is revealed. It is a projection created by Kirsten. She uses it to try and stop the companions. But her plan never works perfectly.

The Sister and the Emerald Dragon

Finally, the heroes discover the Sister of the North. This powerful being is then destroyed. This happens when the Emerald Dragon, Honora, awakens. Honora is another ancient and powerful dragon. With the Sister defeated, Kirsten's power is broken. Mariette is freed from the magic that held her captive. She and Bede are finally able to be together. They live happily ever after.
