Shafera is a special group of plants. It belongs to the sunflower family, which is a very large family of flowering plants. This group is called a monotypic genus, which means it only has one known type of plant in it.
The only plant known in the Shafera group is called Shafera platyphylla. This unique plant grows naturally only in Cuba, an island country in the Caribbean Sea.
About the Name Shafera
The name Shafera was given to honor a famous American botanist named John Adolph Shafer (1863–1918). A botanist is a scientist who studies plants.
What Platyphylla Means
The second part of the plant's name, platyphylla, tells us something about its leaves. It comes from two old Greek words:
- 'Platy-' means "flat" or "broad."
- '-Phylla' means "leaf."
So, Shafera platyphylla basically means "Shafer's flat-leafed plant."
When it Was Discovered
Both the Shafera group and the Shafera platyphylla plant were first described and named in 1912. This information was published in a scientific book called "Publ. Field Mus. Nat. Hist., Bot. (Series 2)" on page 327.
