Shafiga Akhundova (Azerbaijani: Şəfiqə Axundova) was an important Azerbaijani composer. She was born on January 21, 1924, and passed away on July 26, 2013. Shafiga Akhundova made history as the first professional female composer to write an opera in the East. She was also honored with the title of People’s Artist of Azerbaijan.

Early Life and Education
Shafiga Akhundova grew up in a family that loved culture. Her father, Gulam Akhundov, was a well-known cultural figure.
She began her music studies in 1943 at the Baku Musical School. There, she was taught by the famous composer Uzeyir Hajibeyov. Later, in 1956, she continued her education at the Baku Academy of Music. She studied composition and graduated from the class of B. Zeydman.
Achievements and Recognition
Shafiga Akhundova received many awards for her musical work. In 1998, she was given the special title of People’s Artist of Azerbaijan. This award recognizes artists who have made great contributions to their country's culture. In 2005, she was also honored with the Shohrat Order, which is a high award in Azerbaijan.

Operas and Operettas
In 1972, she composed her first opera, which is a play where the words are sung to music. Her opera was called “Galin gayasi,” which means "Bride’s Rock." She also wrote an operetta titled “Ev bizim, sirr bizim.” An operetta is like a lighter, shorter opera, often with spoken parts.
Songs and Stage Music
Besides operas, Shafiga Akhundova composed many songs and romances. Romances are short musical pieces for voice and piano. She also wrote music for more than 30 plays. These plays were performed in state theaters, showing how much her music was loved and used. She even composed special music for children's shows.
