Shafter is a small place in northwest Linn County, Missouri. It's called an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that don't have their own local government like a city or town.

Shafter was named after a famous person: General William Rufus Shafter. He was a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. About 500 people live in Shafter. You can find the community on Missouri Route DD, just a little bit east of Missouri Route 139. A small stream called Parson Creek flows by the west side of Shafter.

Shafter's History

Shafter was started a long time ago, in the late 1800s. Back then, it was mostly a place where people farmed. Farmers grew crops and raised animals to feed their families and sell.

A post office opened in Shafter in 1898. This was an important place where people could send and receive letters. The post office stayed open for a few years, closing in 1906.

Shafter has some old and special buildings. Two of these are the Shafter Union Church and the Shafter Schoolhouse.

The Shafter Union Church was built in 1868. That makes it a very old building! It is so important that it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This is a special list of places in the United States that are important to history.
