Early Life and Education
Shahla Sherkat was born in Isfahan, a city in Iran. She studied psychology at Tehran University. She also earned a certificate in journalism from the Keyhan Institute in Tehran. Later, starting in 2002, she began working towards her master's degree. This advanced degree was in women's studies from Allameh Tabatabai University.
Her Work for Women
Shahla Sherkat is the person who started and published Zanan magazine. The name Zanan means "women" in English. This magazine focused on the important concerns of Iranian women. It bravely discussed many topics, from politics to family issues. Zanan was a very important magazine for women in Iran after the revolution. It helped to push for more open discussions.
Because of its bold content, Shahla Sherkat sometimes had to go to court. The Iranian government felt that Zanan's articles were pushing boundaries too far. After 16 years of publication, Zanan magazine was eventually banned. However, Shahla Sherkat did not give up. She then opened another magazine called Zanan-e Emruz. This new magazine continued her work of focusing on women's issues.
Awards and Recognition
Shahla Sherkat has received several important awards for her brave work. These awards recognize her courage and dedication to journalism.
- In 2005, she received the Louis Lyons Award. This award came from The Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University.
- Also in 2005, she was honored with The Courage in Journalism Award. This award was given by the International Women's Media Foundation (IWMF).
