Shakerato facts for kids
A shakerato (say "shay-keh-RAH-toh") is a cool and tasty coffee drink from Italy. It's made by shaking espresso coffee with ice, making it a perfect treat on a warm day. You can find this popular drink easily all over Italy. It's a bit like a fancy, chilled coffee shake!
What is a Shakerato?
The word "shakerato" comes from the English word "shaken," which tells you exactly how this drink is made. It's a special kind of iced coffee that is very popular in Italy, especially during the warmer months. Unlike some iced coffees that just have ice cubes added, a shakerato is actually shaken vigorously, which gives it a unique frothy top.
How is it Made?
Making a shakerato is quite simple but needs a bit of shaking!
- First, a fresh shot of hot espresso coffee is brewed.
- Next, this hot espresso is poured into a cocktail shaker.
- Then, lots of ice cubes are added to the shaker.
- Sometimes, a little bit of simple syrup (a sweet liquid) is added to make it sweeter, but you can also have it unsweetened.
- The shaker is then closed tightly and shaken very, very hard for about 15 to 20 seconds. This mixes the coffee and ice and creates a lovely, thick foam on top.
- Finally, the cold, frothy coffee is strained into a glass, usually a martini glass, which makes it look extra special and elegant.
Why is it Popular in Italy?
Italians love their coffee, and the shakerato is a perfect example of how they enjoy it in different ways. It's a refreshing alternative to hot espresso when the weather is warm. It's also seen as a stylish and modern coffee drink. Many cafes in Italy will quickly prepare one for you, making it a common and beloved part of Italian coffee culture. It's a great way to cool down and still enjoy the rich taste of espresso.
