Cocktail glass facts for kids
A cocktail glass is a special type of glass with a stem and a bowl shaped like an upside-down cone. It's mainly used for serving cocktails that are "straight-up," meaning they don't have ice in them. People often call it a martini glass, but there are small differences between the two. Today, this glass is used for many different cocktails, like the Martini, Manhattan, Cosmopolitan, and Gimlet.

Why Cocktail Glasses Look That Way
Cocktail glasses were invented in the late 1800s. Their unique shape helps make the drink taste and smell better.
Keeping Drinks Cold
Most cocktails served in these glasses are meant to be very cold, but they don't have ice added to them. The stem lets you hold the glass without your hand warming up the drink. This is important because there's no ice to keep it cool.
Enjoying the Smell
The wide, open top of the glass puts the drink right under your nose. This helps you smell the different ingredients and aromas in the cocktail, which is a big part of enjoying the drink.
Cocktail Glass vs. Martini Glass
Even though the names are often used for the same glass, there are some small differences between a cocktail glass and a martini glass.
Key Differences
A traditional cocktail glass is usually a bit smaller and has a more rounded bowl. It also has a shorter stem and a narrower opening at the top. A martini glass, on the other hand, is often purely cone-shaped, with a longer stem and a wider rim.
The Martini Glass Story
There's a popular story that says the martini glass was invented during the time of Prohibition in the United States. The story suggests the wide rim made it easy to quickly pour out drinks if a secret bar (called a speakeasy) was raided.
However, this story isn't true! The martini glass was actually shown for the first time at the 1925 Paris Exhibition. It was designed as a modern version of the Champagne coupe, which was a popular glass for champagne. In movies from the 1920s, you can even see martini glasses being used for champagne.
Why the Martini Glass Was Designed This Way
The design of the martini glass was influenced by the modern art and architecture of the 1920s. But it was also made to be very useful:
- Longer Stem: This helps keep your hand from warming the drink.
- Wider Rim: This large opening helps the main ingredient in martinis, which is often gin, release its pleasant smell.
- Sloping Sides: The steep sides help keep the ingredients mixed together. They also make it easy to hold a toothpick with olives or other garnishes.
Today, the martini glass is sometimes less popular because drinks can spill out of its wide top quite easily.
Glass Sizes
Cocktail glasses come in different sizes. A standard cocktail glass can hold about 3 to 10 ounces (about 90 to 300 ml). When they were first made, they were usually smaller, holding around 4 ounces (about 120 ml). You can also find much larger cocktail glasses that hold 12 ounces (about 350 ml) or even more!
