Shalom Ben Moses Buzaglo (born around 1700, died 1780) was an important Jewish scholar. He was born in Marrakesh, Morocco. He was known as a kabbalist, which means he studied a special part of Jewish mysticism called Kabbalah. He also served as a dayyan, a judge in Jewish law.

He traveled a lot, visiting places in the Middle East and Europe. He collected money to help poor Jewish people in Palestine. During his travels, he met many other important Kabbalah scholars. He lived in London for a long time. He moved to England in 1745 and stayed there until he passed away.

About His Writings

Shalom Ben Moses Buzaglo wrote many books. Even though his name is on them, his books are mostly collections of teachings from other famous Kabbalah scholars. These include teachings from Isaac Luria and Hayyim ben Joseph Vital. His works helped spread the ideas of Kabbalah to more people.

His Main Books

Buzaglo wrote several important books. Most of them are commentaries on the Zohar. The Zohar is a very old and important book in Kabbalah. A commentary helps explain the meaning of a text.

  • Miḳdash Melek (The Sanctuary of the King): This book explains parts of the Zohar. It was published in Amsterdam in 1750. It uses ideas from earlier commentaries and from Lurianic Kabbalah.
  • Hadrat Melek (The Beauty of the King): This is another commentary on the Zohar. It includes teachings from Isaac Luria and Ḥayyim Vital. It was published in Amsterdam in 1766 and London in 1772.
  • Kisse Melek (The Throne of the King): This book has notes on another Kabbalah text called Tiḳḳune Zohar. It was published in Amsterdam in 1769.
  • Hod Melek (The Majesty of the King): This is a commentary on a part of the Zohar called Zeni'uta. It was published in London.
  • Sefer ha-Zohar (The Book of Zohar): Buzaglo added his own notes to the Zohar text itself. This version was published in London in 1772.
  • Kebod Melek (The Honor of the King): This is a collection of Kabbalistic derashot, which are like sermons or talks. It was published in London.
  • Ma'aseh she-Hayah Kak-Hayah (What Happened Was in This Fashion): This book reports on a legal case. It was published in London in 1774.
  • Kunṭras Ma'aseh Adonai Ki Nora Hu (Fascicle on the Work of God, Which Is Majestic): This was an appeal to the public about his judgment in a lawsuit. It was written in both Hebrew and Judæo-German. It came out in London in 1774.
  • Tokaḥat le-Shobabim we-Taḳḳanah le-Shabim (Admonition for Transgressors and Rehabilitation for the Repentant): This book contains two letters to Israel Meshullam Solomon. These letters also talk about Buzaglo's lawsuit. It was published in London in 1774.

His book "Pnei Melech" was published in London in 1773. It was the first time a systematic commentary on the Zohar was published. This means it was organized in a clear, step-by-step way.

His Legacy

Buzaglo's books were very important for scholars. They brought together many scattered teachings from Isaac Luria's students. Even though his books did not always explain the Zohar word-for-word, they are still valuable for people who study Kabbalah.

Where He is Buried

Shalom Ben Moses Buzaglo is buried in the Novo Cemetery in London. This cemetery is located behind Queen Mary University.
