Sharon (Shari) Stocker is an American archaeologist. She is famous for finding an amazing ancient tomb in Greece. With her husband, Jack L. Davis, she led a team that discovered a 3,500-year-old tomb. They called it the Griffin Warrior Tomb. This happened in May 2015.

Dr. Stocker works at the University of Cincinnati. She helps with excavations at the Palace of Nestor in Greece. She also helped lead archaeological surveys in Albania. Her special skill is studying ancient pottery from the Middle Bronze Age. In 2021, Greece honored her with the Commander of the Order of the Phoenix (Greece) award.

Becoming an Archaeologist

Sharon Stocker studied history and classics at Denison University. She earned her bachelor's degree in 1981. Later, she continued her studies at the University of Cincinnati. She also studied at the University of Illinois at Chicago. In 1996, she earned her master's degree. She then received her PhD in Greek Prehistory in 2009.

Discovering the Griffin Warrior Tomb

The Griffin Warrior Tomb was found in May 2015. Dr. Stocker and Dr. Davis led the team from the University of Cincinnati. This tomb was special because it had not been disturbed. It was still full of ancient treasures.

In October 2015, the Greek government announced the discovery. Over 1,400 artifacts were found inside. These included a bronze sword with an ivory handle. There were also four solid gold rings. This was more gold than found in any other single burial in Greece. The tomb also held ivory combs and carvings. These carvings showed griffins and a lion.

The Pylos Combat Agate

Two years after finding the Griffin Warrior Tomb, the team made another big discovery. This was a tiny, intricately carved sealstone. It was only about 1.4 inches long. The details on it could only be seen with a magnifying glass.

This sealstone is known as the Pylos Combat Agate. It was covered in limestone. It took the researchers over a year to clean and restore it. This small stone shows amazing ancient artwork.
