The Griffin Warrior Tomb Discovery

The Griffin Warrior Tomb was found in May 2015. Sharon Stocker and Jack L. Davis led the team from the University of Cincinnati. This discovery was a huge deal!

In October 2015, the Greek government announced the find. Over 1,400 ancient items were inside the tomb. These included a bronze sword with an ivory handle. They also found four solid gold rings. This was more gold than found in any other single burial in Greece. There were also ivory combs and carvings of griffins and a lion.

The Pylos Combat Agate

Two years after finding the Griffin Warrior Tomb, the University of Cincinnati team made another exciting discovery. They found a tiny, carved sealstone. It was only about 1.4 inches long. You can only see its amazing details with a magnifying glass.

This sealstone is called the Pylos Combat Agate. It was covered in a hard limestone layer. It took the researchers over a year to carefully clean and restore it. This seal is considered one of the most important finds from the tomb.
