Shasta, also known as Cor, is a main character in C. S. Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia. He is the hero of the book The Horse and His Boy. This story happens during the time when the four Pevensie children rule Narnia. Shasta also appears briefly at the end of The Last Battle, the final book in the series.

Shasta was born as the oldest son of King Lune of Archenland. He was also the twin brother of Prince Corin. But when he was a baby, he was kidnapped. He grew up believing he was the son of a fisherman in a land called Calormen. In The Horse and His Boy, Shasta escapes to freedom. He helps save Archenland and Narnia from an attack. Along the way, he learns who he truly is. Shasta becomes King of Archenland and marries Aravis. They have a son named Ram the Great, who becomes a famous king.

Shasta's Early Life

Shasta grew up with a fisherman named Arsheesh in Calormen. Calormen is a dry land south of Narnia. Shasta lived a very poor life and never wore shoes. He thought Arsheesh was his father.

One day, Shasta heard Arsheesh planning to sell him as a slave. He learned that Arsheesh had found him as a baby in a small boat on the beach. Shasta went to the stable and started talking to a horse there. To his surprise, the horse answered him! The horse, named Bree, warned Shasta that his new owner was cruel. Bree suggested they escape together to Narnia, a land where animals can talk and people are free.

Journey to Freedom

Shasta agreed to escape with Bree. They set off that night. Soon, they met another pair of travelers who were also running away. These were a girl named Aravis (a Calormene noblewoman called a Tarkheena) and her talking horse, Hwin.

The four friends traveled together. They made their way to Tashbaan, which is the capital city of Calormen. There, Shasta was mistaken for Prince Corin of Archenland. This was because they looked very much alike.

Warning Archenland and Narnia

While in Tashbaan, Shasta learned that Calormen was planning to attack Archenland. This attack was meant to be the first step to conquering Narnia. Shasta and his friends quickly left to warn Archenland.

Their journey was very hard. Shasta was tired and still barefoot. But he successfully warned the people of Archenland. While riding with the Archenlanders, Shasta got lost in a thick fog. Then, the great lion Aslan guided him through a mountain pass into Narnia. Shasta's warning helped gather Narnian forces to help their allies. With Corin's encouragement, Shasta joined the battle against the Calormenes.

Discovering His True Identity

After the battle, Shasta learned his true identity. He was actually Prince Cor of Archenland! He was the older son of King Lune and Corin's twin brother. This meant he was the rightful heir to the throne.

When Cor was a baby, a prophecy said he would save Archenland from a great evil. Because of this, enemies of Archenland kidnapped him. His father chased their ship, but the kidnappers put the baby prince in a rowboat with a knight. This was the same boat where Arsheesh found him. The knight had died, but Aslan guided the boat to shore so Cor could survive.

The prophecy came true when Cor warned the Archenlanders and helped the Narnians fight against the Calormene leader, Rabadash. Cor was reunited with his father and brother. Aravis came to live with them at the castle of Anvard.

King Cor of Archenland

Cor and Aravis eventually married. Their son, Ram the Great, became known as the greatest king of Archenland.

King Cor, King Lune, Queen Aravis, and Prince Corin Thunder-Fist are all mentioned as being present in the "new Narnia" at the end of The Last Battle.

Cor is a descendant of King Frank I of Narnia. King Frank I was originally from England on Earth.
