A Look Back at Shawtown's History

Shawtown began to grow in 1882. This was when the New York, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad built its tracks through the area. The railroad helped connect places and made it easier for people and goods to travel.

Even before the railroad arrived, a post office was set up in Shawtown in 1881. This post office helped people send and receive letters and packages. It served the community for many years before closing down in 1923.
