She-Guardian is a large sculpture made by the Russian artist Dashi Namdakov. It shows a make-believe creature with wings, standing guard over its babies. This amazing statue is very tall, reaching 11 meters (about 36 feet) to the very tip of its wings!
The sculpture was put in place by the Halcyon Gallery. They had permission from the Westminster Council to install it.
Some people thought the sculpture looked a bit scary or aggressive because of its open mouth. But Dashi Namdakov, the artist, explained his idea. He said, "I never saw any threat in its open mouth. I saw it as protecting its young and guarding its family." So, the sculpture is meant to show strength and protection.
About She-Guardian
She-Guardian is a special type of art called a landscape sculpture. This means it's designed to be seen outdoors, often in a park or open space. The creature it shows is a mythical beast, which means it's from stories and legends, not a real animal. It's made from a strong material called patinated bronze. Patinated bronze is metal that has been treated to give it a special color and look, often a greenish or brownish finish.
How Was It Made?
The idea for the She-Guardian sculpture came to Dashi Namdakov in a unique way. He was given a skull from a lynx by hunters from Siberia. A lynx is a type of wild cat. This skull inspired him to create the powerful and protective creature we see today. The sculpture was carefully crafted from this initial idea.
Where Can You See It?
She-Guardian was put on display on May 11, 2015. You can find it in London, England, near a place called Cumberland Gate, Marble Arch. It's a great place to visit and see this impressive artwork up close.
