A Look Back: Sheffield's History

The community of Sheffield once had its own post office. The only postmaster for the Sheffield Post Office was Thomas Madison Smith. He ran it from February 1, 1893, until January 2, 1907, when the post office closed down. This post office was also a store, believed to have been built before 1894. The exact reason for the name "Sheffield" is not known today. Later, in 1948, Wade and JT Smith opened a general store, along with a business that sold and repaired furniture.

Sheffield Today: Community Life

Just like in many other rural areas of North Carolina, the Sheffield-Calahaln Volunteer Fire Department is a very important part of the community. It often serves as a central gathering spot. The Community Center is also available for everyone to use.

Today, the Sheffield Pallet Company is the only active business in the area. There was once a popular place called the Sheffield Music Hall. It was located at the corner of Turkey Foot Road and Sheffield Road. John Henry and Ethel Reeves owned and operated it. People would go there to enjoy live bluegrass music and dancing. This music hall was sold by the family in 2023. The local weekly newspaper, The Davie County Enterprise-Record, helps keep the community connected. It features a special news column each week about Sheffield-Calahaln, sharing local events and other important information.
