Shehu Idris (born February 20, 1936 – died September 20, 2020) was an important leader in Nigeria. He was a teacher who became the 18th Emir of Zazzau. An Emir is like a traditional king or ruler in some parts of Nigeria. The Zazzau kingdom is based in a city called Zaria.
Shehu Idris was also the head of the Zazzau Emirate Council. This council helps manage the Zazzau kingdom. He also led the Council of Chiefs in Kaduna State. He was a member of the Fula people. He became Emir on February 8, 1975. This happened after the previous Emir, Alhaji Muhammadu Aminu, passed away. Shehu Idris ruled for 45 years, from 1975 to 2020. This made him the longest-ruling Emir in Zazzau's history. After he died, Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli became the 19th Emir of Zazzau.
Early Life and Learning
Shehu Idris was born into the family of Maiunguwa Idrisu Auta. His father was a local leader in Unguwar Iya, a part of the Zazzau kingdom. His father was sometimes called Autan Sambo. His mother's name was Hajiya Aminatu.
Shehu Idris's father, Maiunguwa Idris, was nicknamed Auta. This was because he was the youngest child of Emir Muhammadu Sambo. Emir Muhammadu Sambo ruled Zazzau from about 1879 to 1888. Emir Muhammadu Sambo was the second child of Emir Abdulkarimi. Abdulkarimi ruled from about 1834 to 1846. So, Shehu Idris's father was a local leader, and his grandfather and great-grandfather were Emirs of Zazzau.
Idris began his education with two Islamic teachers in Zaria. Then, he went to Zaria Elementary School. He studied there from 1947 to 1950. During this time, when he was 12, his father died. Idris continued both his religious and regular schooling. He joined Zaria Middle School in 1950 and finished in 1955. After that, he went to Katsina Training College to become a teacher.
Later Life and Work
In 1958, Shehu Idris started working as a teacher in Hunkuyi. He then taught at a few other schools in Zaria. In the 1960s, he worked as a private secretary. He worked for the Emir of Zazzau at the time, Muhammadu Aminu. In 1965, he became the secretary for the Zaria Native Authority council.
In 1973, he received the special title of Dan Madamin Zaria. He was also made the district head of Zaria. This meant he was in charge of a specific area.
Shehu Idris became Emir after Emir Aminu passed away in 1975. On January 10, 2015, he celebrated 40 years since he became Emir. On February 8, 2020, he celebrated his 45th anniversary as Emir.
