Shelby, Missouri facts for kids
Shelby is a small, unincorporated community located in the northern part of Linn County, Missouri, in the U.S. state of Missouri. It's not a city or town with its own government, but rather a group of homes and businesses in a specific area. You can find Shelby about 7.5 miles east of another community called Purdin, right along Missouri Route V.
A Look Back at Shelby's History
Shelby got its start a long time ago. In 1882, a post office was opened there, which was a big deal for the people living in the area because it made sending and receiving mail much easier. This post office stayed open for many years, finally closing in 1904.
The community was named after a person named Sheldon Wilson. He was a local merchant, which means he owned a business that sold goods to people. Everyone knew him by his nickname, "Shelby," and that's how the community got its name!
