Sheldon Reynolds: A TV Producer
Sheldon Reynolds started his career making TV shows. He was a producer, writer, and editor for a show called Foreign Intrigue.
Bringing Sherlock Holmes to TV
In 1954, Sheldon Reynolds created the first American TV show about Sherlock Holmes. This show was simply called Sherlock Holmes. It was the first time these famous characters appeared on American television.
The show starred Ronald Howard as Sherlock Holmes. Howard Marion-Crawford played his loyal friend, Doctor Watson. Archie Duncan was Inspector Lestrade. Most of the filming happened in France. They even built a street in Paris to look like Baker Street!
Later, in 1979, Reynolds worked on another Sherlock Holmes TV series. This one was called Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson. Geoffrey Whitehead played Holmes in this show. Donald Pickering was Watson, and Patrick Newell played Lestrade. This series was filmed in Poland. It followed a similar style to his earlier show.
Getting the Rights to Sherlock Holmes
In the 1970s, Sheldon Reynolds wanted to make TV shows directly from the original Sherlock Holmes books. The rights to these stories were owned by a bank at that time.
Reynolds worked with a group of people to buy these rights. They successfully bought them at an auction. This meant they could now create new shows based on the famous stories.
