Sheldon Stanley Cohen (born June 28, 1927 – died September 4, 2018) was an American lawyer. He was a very important person in the United States government. From 1965 to 1969, he was the head of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). This is the part of the government that collects taxes.
Sheldon Cohen's Early Life and Career
Sheldon Cohen was born in Washington, D.C.. His father had moved to the U.S. from Lithuania. Sheldon went to public schools in Washington, D.C.
During World War II, he served in the United States Navy. After the war, he studied law. He earned his law degree from the George Washington University Law School.
He then worked as a lawyer in Washington, D.C. Sheldon Cohen was also involved with the Democratic Party. He even worked as a main lawyer for the Democratic National Committee.
Leading the IRS: A Young Commissioner
In 1965, Sheldon Cohen became the Commissioner of Internal Revenue. He was the youngest person ever to hold this important job. The Commissioner is in charge of the IRS. This government agency collects taxes from people and businesses.
During his time as Commissioner, Mr. Cohen helped the IRS become more modern. He played a big part in making the IRS fully computerized. This made it easier and faster to handle tax information.
A writer named John Brooks described him in 1968. He said Cohen was a "man with close-cropped brown hair, candid eyes, and a guileless manner." Brooks also noted that Cohen was "less outgoing and more thoughtful" than the Commissioner before him, Mortimer Caplin.
Later Years and Passing
Sheldon Cohen passed away on September 4, 2018. He was 91 years old. He died in Chevy Chase, Maryland, due to heart failure.
