How the Art Center Began
The Shemer Art Center started thanks to a woman named Martha Shemer. In 1984, she bought a beautiful old house and some land. This house was built in a style called Spanish Colonial Revival, which looks like old Spanish missions. Martha wanted to save this special property.
Instead of keeping it for herself, Martha gave the house and land to the City of Phoenix. Her dream was for it to become a place where everyone could learn about art.
Saving the Shemer Art Center
In 2010, the art center faced a big problem. There wasn't enough money to keep it open, and it almost had to close its doors. But the people of Phoenix didn't want to lose this wonderful art space.
Citizens came together and formed a group called the Shemer Art Center and Museum Association. This group worked hard to help manage the center and raise money. Because of their efforts, the Shemer Art Center was saved and continues to be a vibrant place for art today.
