A Look at History

How the Museum Started

The Sherbrooke Museum of Fine Arts began in 1982. It was started by people in the area who really loved art. Since then, it has become the main place in the Estrie region for showing and taking care of art.

Becoming an Official Museum

The museum became officially recognized by the Quebec Ministry of Culture and Communications in March 1990. This means it met important standards for museums.

Moving to a New Home

In 1996, the museum moved to a special new building. This building used to be the main office for the Eastern Townships Bank. It was built way back in 1876. The old bank building was completely updated to become the awesome museum it is today.
