About Sheree Renée Thomas
Sheree Renée Thomas was born on September 30, 1972, in Memphis, Tennessee. Her father was in the Air Force, so her family moved around a lot when she was a child. She lived in New York for twenty years before moving back to her hometown of Memphis.
Her Beliefs on Storytelling
In 2020, Thomas became the editor of The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction. She believes it is important to include many different voices and ideas in stories. She has always supported diversity in the science fiction world.
She once said that "good stuff is always being published." She wants to see "mo’ different good stuff" that shows other ways of looking at the world. This includes stories from places like South Asia, Belgium, or Cuba. She believes these voices might not have been heard much before.
Thomas also thinks that the world around us inspires writers. She feels writers should talk about important topics, even difficult ones like racism. She encourages writers to create stories that reflect themselves and their communities.

Award-Winning Editor
Thomas is the editor of two important book collections called Dark Matter: A Century of Speculative Fiction from the African Diaspora (published in 2000) and Dark Matter: Reading the Bones (published in 2004). These books gather works by many African-American writers. The stories are in the genres of science fiction, horror, and fantasy.
Both Dark Matter collections won the World Fantasy Award for Best Anthology. The first book won in 2001, and the second won in 2005. Dark Matter was also named a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. Sheree Renée Thomas was the first Black writer to receive this special recognition for editing.
Her Own Writings
Thomas is also a talented author herself. She wrote Nine Bar Blues: Stories from an Ancient Future, which came out in 2020. She also wrote Sleeping Under the Tree of Life, which was recognized for the 2016 James A. Tiptree, Jr. Award. Another one of her books is Shotgun Lullabies: Stories & Poems.
She is the publisher of Wanganegresse Press. Her stories and poems have appeared in many different collections and literary magazines. These include "The Big Book of Modern Fantasy (1945-2010)," Konch, Drumvoices Revue, and storySouth. Her work has also received Honorable Mention in the Year's Best Fantasy and Horror collections.
