The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim picked Sherman Johnson in the 14th round of the 2012 MLB draft. After signing his contract, Johnson started playing for the Orem Owlz. He spent his first season there. He had a .269 batting average, three home runs, and twenty RBIs in 54 games.

In 2013, he played for two teams: the Burlington Bees and the Inland Empire 66ers. He had a combined batting average of .264. He hit four home runs and had 34 RBIs. He also hit 23 doubles in 111 games. In 2014, he played for Inland Empire again. He had a .276 batting average with 17 home runs and 78 RBIs. His OPS, which measures how well a player hits, was .847 in 136 games.

Sherman Johnson played for the Arkansas Travelers in 2015. He batted .204 with seven home runs and 53 RBIs in 135 games. In 2016, he played for both Arkansas and the Salt Lake Bees. On February 29, 2020, Johnson signed a minor league deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He did not play any games in 2020. This was because the minor league season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Pirates organization released Johnson on June 9.

On March 24, 2021, Johnson signed with the Kane County Cougars. This team is part of the American Association of Professional Baseball. However, he left the Cougars on May 12 without playing a game for them. On May 12, Johnson signed a minor league contract with the Minnesota Twins organization. Johnson played in 75 games that year. He split his time between the Double-A Wichita Wind Surge and the Triple-A St. Paul Saints. He had a combined .202 batting average with 5 home runs, 33 RBIs, and 3 stolen bases. He became a free agent after that season on November 7.

On April 5, 2022, Johnson signed with the Kane County Cougars again. He played in 90 games for the Cougars. He had a .231 batting average with 13 home runs and 52 RBIs. He was released by the team on November 3.

Becoming a Baseball Coach

On February 2, 2023, Sherman Johnson was announced as the hitting coach for the Bowie Baysox. This team is the Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. On February 7, 2024, the Orioles announced a new role for Johnson. He became the upper–level hitting coordinator. This means he helped oversee hitting instruction for players in higher minor league levels.

On November 14, 2024, Johnson received a promotion. He became the assistant hitting coach for the major league team. This means he now helps the main Baltimore Orioles team with their hitting.
