The Sherman Mound and Village site is an ancient place in Mississippi County, Arkansas. It is an archeological site that dates back to around 1200 AD. This important historical spot was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2018.

Discovering the Sherman Mound and Village

The Sherman Mound and Village site gives us clues about how people lived long ago. It shows evidence of two main time periods. These are the Prehistoric Late Woodland and Middle Mississippian periods.

What Was Found There?

Scientists used special tools to look underground without digging. This method is called geophysics. It helped them find many interesting things. They discovered the layout of an ancient town.

The town had a main mound and a plaza area. A plaza is like a central open space. There were also two smaller mounds, called Mound B and Mound C.

Town Defenses and Homes

The ancient town was protected by a strong wall. This wall was called a palisade. It likely had towers, known as bastions, for defense. These towers would have helped people watch for visitors or threats.

Scientists also found areas where people lived. These residential areas had many signs of past activity. They found objects on the surface and features underground. These clues tell us about the homes and daily lives of the people.

The Amazing Sherman Mound

The most impressive part of the site is the Sherman Mound itself. It is one of the largest and best-preserved earthworks from the Middle Mississippian period. An earthwork is a large structure made from earth.

This mound is found in the Central Mississippi Valley. It stands as a powerful reminder of the people who built it centuries ago. It helps us understand their culture and how they organized their towns.
