How Sherwood Forest Started
Sherwood Forest began a long time ago, in the early 1900s. A man named William Cochran, who sold rugs, had an idea. He first thought about building an amusement park near Annapolis. But that plan didn't work out.
In 1914, Cochran started a new project. He began clearing trees to create a peaceful summer resort. This resort was meant for middle-class families. It was designed to be a quiet escape from city life.
Building the Community
Many homes were built in this planned community. There were 341 houses in total. Along with the homes, many useful places were added. These included a golf course, a clubhouse, and a softball field.
The community also had a general store and a post office. For fun, there was a swimming pool, a bowling alley, and a library. Residents could also enjoy a pier, a marina, and tennis courts.
Home Ownership in Sherwood Forest
Homes in Sherwood Forest are a bit different. The land for the homes is leased for 99 years. This means residents rent the land from the community association for a very long time.
It is quite hard to get a home in Sherwood Forest. Most homes are leased by people who already live there. Often, current residents or their family members take over the leases. To lease a home, new residents usually need a sponsor from the community.
Life and Rules in Sherwood Forest
Sherwood Forest is a gated community. This means there are gates that control who can enter. The community is managed by two main groups. These groups work together to keep Sherwood Forest running smoothly.
Community Management
The first group is the Sherwood Forest Club. This Club is in charge of community activities. They also set the rules and guidelines for how people live there. These rules are called bylaws.
The second group is the Sherwood Forest Company. This Company handles the physical parts of the community. They take care of roads, piers, and other facilities. They also maintain the waterfront and other shared areas.
Unique House Rules
The community has special rules about how houses look. These rules help make sure the homes fit in with the surrounding woods. Houses can only be painted certain colors.
Most homes are painted brown or green. Some limited homes can be painted white. The green color is a special shade. It is known as "Sherwood Green" and was created by Bruning Paint Co. in Baltimore.
Sports and Activities
Sherwood Forest has a 9-hole golf course. It was designed by Herbert Strong. The course first opened in 1919. There was once another 18-hole golf course. This course was sold and is now part of a nearby community. That community is called The Downs on the Severn.
The Sherwood Forest Club also runs a summer camp. This camp is just for the children of residents. The camp started in the 1920s. It has stayed much the same since then, offering a traditional summer experience.
