The Shields Woolen Mill is an old building located right next to the Mississippi River in Davenport, Iowa, United States. It's a very important historical place! Because of its history, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. Today, this historic building is no longer a mill. Instead, it has been changed into offices and businesses, and it's now known as One River Place.

What Does the Mill Look Like?

This building has two floors and was built for industrial work. It has different types of roofs, including some that are flat and some that are shaped like a triangle (called a gable roof). The mill is made from strong brick, and it sits on a base of stone. You can even see the stone foundation on one side of the building.

Windows and Original Design

All over the building, you'll see windows that have a rounded top, like an arch. The very middle part of the building, which has a fancy entrance with a triangular shape above it (a pediment), was the first part built. This original section was finished in 1863. More parts were added to the building over time, with the last addition completed in 1868.

Location and History

The Shields Woolen Mill is in an area that used to be full of mills along the Mississippi River. People believe this is the oldest building still standing in Davenport that was specifically designed to use steam power for its machines.
