The Ship's Company Theatre is a professional theatre group located in Parrsboro, Nova Scotia. It's a special place where actors perform plays for audiences. How It Started
The Ship's Company Theatre was founded in 1984. It was started by two people, Michael Fuller and Mary Vingoe. They wanted to create a place where Canadian stories could be told through theatre.
Why the Name 'Ship's Company'?
The theatre's unique name, "Ship's Company," comes from its very first home. The theatre is located inside or around the MV Kipawo, which is a very old ferry boat. This ferry was one of Canada's longest-serving ferries. It is now permanently resting on the shore of Parrsboro Harbour.
In the mid-1980s, there was a plan to turn the MV Kipawo into a museum, but it didn't happen. So, the theatre company decided to use the ship instead! In 2004, the theatre expanded its facilities. A large performance hall was built, and the MV Kipawo was fully enclosed within the outdoor lobby area. This means the historic ship is still a big part of the theatre's identity.
