Shippards Chine is a special natural valley on the southwest coast of the Isle of Wight, an island in England. It is located near the village of Brook and a place called Hanover Point.

What is Shippards Chine?

Shippards Chine used to be a small, sandy valley that carried water to the sea. But to protect the cliffs from washing away, engineers built a special tunnel called a culvert. This culvert now carries the water safely down to the beach.

Access to the Beach

There are also steps built onto the culvert. These steps help people get down to the beautiful sandy beach of Compton Bay.

Where Does the Water Come From?

The water flowing through Shippards Chine and its culvert comes from a few places. It flows from a small lake about 200 meters (about 650 feet) to the east. This lake is just across the Military Road. Water also comes from small streams that run down the hillside from the north.

Exploring the Area

The Isle of Wight Coastal Path is a walking trail that crosses the top of the chine. It goes over a small footbridge. The land around Shippards Chine is owned and looked after by the National Trust. You can easily get to this area from a nearby car park.
