Shipyard Acres was a special community that existed for a short time in Napa County, California. It was built during World War II to help with the war effort. This community was located about 2.5 miles (4 km) south-southeast of the city of Napa. It sat at an elevation of 33 feet (10 meters) above sea level.

A Community for War Workers

Shipyard Acres was a unique neighborhood built during World War II. It was created to house families of people working hard to support the war. At its busiest, over 2,550 people lived there.

The community had nearly 400 houses. These homes were made mostly of plywood. They were built quickly to give shelter to the many workers and their families.

Who Lived There?

Many residents of Shipyard Acres worked at the Basalt Rock Company. This company was busy building different types of ships for the war. Other people living in the community worked at places like Mare Island Naval Shipyard and Travis Air Force Base. Some also worked at the Napa State Hospital or the Benicia Arsenal.

Many families moved to Shipyard Acres from states like Arkansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, and Texas. They came to California looking for jobs that helped with the war.

When Did It Exist?

Shipyard Acres was built in 1943. It was located where Kaiser Road and Napa-Vallejo Highway meet today. The community was taken apart in the mid-1950s, after the war ended.

Some of the houses were moved to a different area. They were taken a few miles west to a place called Cuttings Wharf. These moved houses were still standing there until 2012.
