About Shlomo Artzi

Shlomo Artzi was born in a small community called Alonei Abba in Israel. His parents were survivors of the Holocaust, a terrible time in history when many Jewish people were persecuted. Their experiences greatly influenced Shlomo and his sister, Nava Semel, who became a writer. His father, Yitzhak Artzi, was a political activist and later became a member of the Knesset, which is like Israel's parliament.

When Shlomo was eight years old, his family moved to north Tel Aviv. In elementary school, his friends thought he would become an actor because he was so good at it. However, when he was twelve, he started playing the guitar and singing. He performed with his boy scout group and at friends' parties.

Shlomo Artzi has been married twice. He has three children from his first marriage: Ben Artzi, who is also a singer; Shiri Artzi, who is an author; and Jonathan Artzi.

Today, Shlomo Artzi lives in Ramat Gan, a city in Israel. He is a big fan of the Maccabi Netanya football (soccer) team. He even wrote a song for them when they won a championship in 1971.

When Shlomo Artzi was 16, he began writing his own songs. He started performing for soldiers with his classmate, Rivka Menashe. She later became a well-known singer named Riki Gal.

During his time in the army, Shlomo joined the Israeli Navy Band. This was a special army music group. He performed in their shows alongside other people who would later become famous, like Rivka Zohar and Riki Gal. At first, he didn't stand out much. But soon, he became the main singer and one of the biggest stars in the band. He sang lead on many songs on their albums.

Becoming a Solo Star in the 1970s

In 1970, while still in the army, Shlomo Artzi entered the Israel Song Festival. This was a big music competition. He sang a song called Pitom Achshav, Pitom Hayom (Suddenly Now, Suddenly Today). This song was a big success and convinced him to keep singing. In 1979, he recorded Drachim (Ways), which had a fresh, new sound. His 1981 album "Khatzot" (Midnight) continued this new style.
