Shooting is a sport where athletes use firearms to hit targets. At the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, shooting events took place from July 27 to August 5, 2024. They were held at the National Shooting Centre in Châteauroux.

A total of 340 athletes competed in 15 different shooting events. This was a bit fewer than the 360 athletes at the last Olympics. The number of men and women competing was equal. Also, some new rules were added for the finals, and a new mixed team event was introduced.

New Rules for Olympic Shooting

On June 9, 2017, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) approved some big changes for Olympic shooting. These changes were made to make the sport more exciting and popular around the world.

Changes to Events

One important change was replacing the mixed team trap event with mixed team skeet. This helped make sure there was an equal number of events for men and women. The total number of athletes was also reduced from 360 at the Tokyo 2020 Games to 340.

New Final Format

A new way of doing the finals was also introduced for individual shooting events.

  • In the finals, all shooters start with zero points.
  • They must hit a certain number of targets in different rounds.
  • For pistol and shotgun events, four finalists compete in two groups. The top two from each group move to the medal rounds.
  • For rifle and air pistol events, eight finalists compete. Shooters are eliminated one by one until only two are left. These two then compete for the gold and silver medals.

How Athletes Qualify

To compete in the Olympics, athletes need to earn a "quota place." This means they get a spot for their country.

Earning Quota Places

  • In early 2022, the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) changed the rules to ensure equal chances for men and women.
  • A total of 340 quota places were given out. Half went to men and half to women.
  • Athletes earned these spots at major world and continental championships.
  • The qualification period started in 2022 with European Championships.
  • The top two countries in each event at these championships earned 16 quota places.
  • More places were given out at the ISSF World Championships.
  • If a country didn't get a spot through these events, the highest-ranked shooter from that country in the World Ranking list could still get a place.

Host Country Spot

Like in previous Olympics, the host country, France, was guaranteed 12 quota places. They got one spot in each individual shooting event.
