Shop Row is a special old building in Woolloongabba, Queensland, Australia. It's a row of shops that was built around 1903. This building is so important that it's listed on the Queensland Heritage Register, which means it's protected because of its history and unique look. History of Shop Row
This two-storey brick building, with its row of shops, was built around 1903. It was likely built for John Brett and Winifred Mary Charlton. They owned the Clarence Hotel, which was right next door.
Before this brick shop row was built, there were other small businesses on this land. The Charltons bought the land in 1902-1903. After they bought it, the land was divided up, allowing the new brick shops to be built in 1903.
Over the years, many different businesses have been in these shops. They included fruit sellers, hairdressers, tobacco shops, and clothing stores. Even the Australian Bank of Commerce once had a spot here.
What Does Shop Row Look Like?
Shop Row is a two-storey building made of brick. It has five shops in a row. The roof is a single, sloped roof made of corrugated iron. It slopes down from the front to the back of the building.
The front of the building, facing Stanley Street, has a striking top section called a parapet. This parapet is made of exposed brick. It has fancy decorations made from cement. In the middle of the parapet, there's a curved design with plant shapes. On either side of this, you can see arch shapes that stick out from the wall.
On the first floor, there's a verandah that hangs out over the street. It's supported by double wooden posts. These posts have decorative supports called brackets on three sides. The verandah also has a wooden fence-like railing called a balustrade and a decorative band called a frieze. From each shop, a set of French doors with a fanlight (a window shaped like a fan) opens onto this verandah.
At the ground level, there's a corrugated iron awning that covers the footpath. This awning is also held up by double wooden posts.
Why is Shop Row Important?
Shop Row was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992. This means it's considered very important for a few reasons:
- It shows how Queensland's history has changed.
Shop Row was built around 1903. It's a great example of the type of shop buildings that were common during the Federation era in Brisbane. It's also one of the few old commercial buildings left from Woolloongabba's recovery period in the early 1900s.
- It shows what a typical old shop row looked like.
This building helps us understand what a "Federation-era shop row" was like. It's a good example of how these types of buildings were designed and used back then.
- It looks beautiful and adds to the street.
