The Story of Si Tanka University
How Si Tanka University Began
Si Tanka University started its journey in 1973. It was first known as the Cheyenne River Community College. This college was created by the Yankton Sioux Tribe, a Native American tribe.
Name Change and Growth
In July 1999, the college changed its name. It became Si Tanka University. This new name honored a respected leader of the Sioux people, Spotted Elk, also known as Si Tanka (Bigfoot).
In May 2001, the small tribal college grew bigger. It bought Huron University. Huron University was an older, private four-year university. It had been around since 1883.
Accreditation and Challenges
In February 2002, Si Tanka/Huron University received good news. Its "accreditation" was approved. Accreditation means an official group says a school meets high quality standards. This approval came from the Higher Learning Commission. This commission is part of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
However, the university faced money problems. Because of these financial difficulties, Si Tanka University closed down in 2006. Its accreditation was officially taken away on August 6, 2006.
Reopening as an Online University
Years later, in 2010, something new happened. A group of former students from Si Tanka University decided to reopen it. They started Si Tanka University again, but this time as an online university. It is currently an unaccredited online university.
