Sibylla Schwarz facts for kids
Sibylla Schwarz (born February 14, 1621, died July 31, 1638) was a talented German poet. She lived during a time called the Baroque era. Sibylla was born and passed away in her hometown of Greifswald, Germany.
Her Life Story
Sibylla Schwarz was the daughter of Christian Schwarz, who was the mayor of Greifswald. Her mother's name was Regina Schwarz.
Her early life was mostly peaceful. However, things changed when the Thirty Years' War reached Greifswald in 1627. This was a very difficult time for many people. Sadly, her mother also passed away in 1630.
Sibylla started writing poems when she was only seven years old. Her writings often showed the challenges of living during the Thirty Years' War. She wrote about important feelings and events. Her poems explored themes like friendship, love, war, and death.
In 1638, Sibylla suddenly became ill. She died at the young age of 17.
Her Amazing Poems
Sibylla's poems were published after she died. Her teacher, Samuel Gerlach, helped to publish them in 1650. The book was called Deutsche Poëtische Gedichte and contained over 100 poems.
She became famous as the "Pomeranian Sappho". This nickname meant she was seen as a very important female poet, like the ancient Greek poet Sappho. However, her work was largely forgotten in the 1700s. Later, in the 1800s, people rediscovered her poems. Today, she is known as one of the few important female writers from the German Baroque period.
