Siemomysł (also spelled Ziemomysł) was an important early ruler in the history of Poland. He was the third known duke of the Polans people. He belonged to the Piast family, which was the first ruling family of Poland. Siemomysł was also the father of Mieszko I, who became the first Christian ruler of Poland.

Who Was Siemomysł?

Siemomysł lived a long time ago, dying around the years 950 to 960. He was the son of Lestek, who was the second known Duke of the Polans. We know about Siemomysł mostly from a historical book called Gesta principum Polonorum. This book was written by a person known as Gallus Anonymous.

What Siemomysł Did

According to historical records, Siemomysł played a big role in shaping the early lands of Poland. He is known for passing on the lands of the Polans, Goplans, and Masovians to his son, Mieszko I. Mieszko I then made these lands even bigger during his own time as ruler.

Some historians believe Siemomysł ruled from about 930 AD. Others think his rule started later, around 950 AD. He is often credited with bringing together the lands of the Polanie, Goplanie, and Mazowszanie tribes. However, some experts think his father, Lestek, might have started this process first.

Siemomysł and Other Groups

A modern Polish historian, Henryk Łowmiański, suggests that Siemomysł may have helped the Ukrani people. This was during their fight against the Germans in 954 AD. This shows that Siemomysł was involved in important events of his time.

Siemomysł's Family

We do not know the name of Siemomysł's wife or wives. There is a theory that he might have married the daughter of Włodzisław, a prince from the Lędzianie tribe. However, there is no strong historical proof for this idea. For a while, people thought his wife was named Gorka, but this idea was shown to be incorrect in 1895 by Oswald Balzer.

Siemomysł had two known sons:

Mieszko I became a very important ruler after his father.

Where Is He Buried?

The exact place where Siemomysł was buried is not known today. This is common for many rulers from such early times in history.
