The Piast dynasty was a very important family. They were the first rulers of Poland a long, long time ago. Their story began with Duke Mieszko I, who lived around 930 to 992.
The Piast family ruled as kings in Poland until 1370. This was when King Casimir III the Great passed away. However, some parts of the Piast family kept ruling in other areas. These included the Duchy of Masovia and the Duchies of Silesia. The very last male ruler from the Silesian Piast branch died in 1675. The Piasts were connected to many other royal families in Europe through marriage. They held many important titles.
